We can think of Islamic dietary laws in levels of importance, or unanimity in the Muslim community.
Practicing Muslims would unanimously agree that they should not consume -
1) Alcohol
2) Pork
3) The meat of Carnivorous animals (except those that live in the sea)
In terms of permissable foods, there are also special guidelines with respect to how Meat ought to be prepared. These guidelines are alternatively known as Zabiha, or Hallal, and Muslims differ in how closely they adhere to the Zabiha principles.
Zabiha principles state that the animal being butchered for meat must be separated from its flock, so they can not see the butchering; must be butchered in the neck with a sharp knife; and a short prayer must be read before the butchering.
Understandably, these rules would preclude Muslims from eating most of the meat currently sold in our super-markets where animals are butchered in factory-like abattoire's with a bolt to the head, and a long line of animals behind them.
As such, some Muslims absolutely insist on eating Zabiha/Halal meat, while others are more flexible. If you are unsure in a specific case, the best thing to do is just ask. Over the last several years, many of the larger chains have begun carrying Zabiha meat in their organic freezers in North America, and most large cities will have a Zabiha/Halal Butcher shop.
The Quran, Muslims holy book, rules are:
1. Quran, Chapter 5, verse 3: " Forbidden (for food) to you (Muslims) are: Al-Maitah (dead animals-cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine (Pork), and that on which Allah's name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, (that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah or has slaughtered for idols) and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns- and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal-unless being able to slaughter it (before its death)-.... But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin by eating what is forbidden above, then surely Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful"
2. Quran, Chapter 5, verse 5: " Made lawful to you this day At-Tayyibat (all kinds of lawful foods, which Allah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables and fruits). The food (slaughtered cattle, eatable animals) of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them..."
In addition to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saying (hadith):
Prophet Mohamed (peace be on him) states also that:
"forbade the eating of any wild animals with a canine tooth and of any bird with talons."
"Wild animals" denotes those which prey on others and devour them by tearing them apart, e.g., the lion, leopard, wolf, and the like; birds with talons such as the hawk, eagle, falcon, etc., do the same.
From the above, it is clear that what is forbidden to eat, except in cases of severe hunger, are mainly dead animals, pork, blood, and what is not slaughtered under name of God.
Alcohol and other intoxicants are also forbidden in Islam.
All good and healthy foods are permitted. The only foods not permitted are harmful things. They are: Pork, blood, what is found already dead (with the exception of fish), what has been dedicated to idols, and carnivorous animals (like tigers and other meat-eating animals). Pork is prohibited not because of the trichinosis worm. It is more than that. Pig meat is and always will be harmful to people - perhaps not physically as much as spiritually. It affects people who eat it in a negative spiritual manner, somehow. The proper manner of slaughtering an animal is to say: "In the name of God" and then cut the jugular vein with a very sharp knife. That way, the animal feels very little pain and the heart keeps pumping most of the blood out of it's body. In essence the animal simply looses conciousness - it falls asleep from lack of blood. This is the method prescribed by Jewish Law, as well. www.freequran.org
