Mormons will eat just about anything if they're hungry enough. What they won't do is smoke, drink alcohol, take illegal drugs, drink coffee or tea (though they will drink herbal tea). This comes from a code of health given the Mormons or "Latter-day Saints" as they prefer to be called, called the Word of Wisdom. It was given to the prophet Joseph Smith at a time when it science hadn't specified the dangers of these substances as in depth as they are specified today. Latter-day Saints believe what it says in the New Testament, that the body is a temple, and shouldn't be defiled: which would include filling it with substances that are harmful to the body. Yes, they also encourage members to eat healthy foods. But the Latter-day Saints do enjoy things like Prime Ribs smothered in honey-mustard barbecue sauce, tender and juicy Sirloin steaks, pumpkin cookies packed with semi-sweet Chocolate Chips, double fudge German chocolate ice-cream cake smothered in dark-chocolate and vanilla frosting, Delicious cream-filled Maple bars and other donut varieties, etc. They do believe, however, that such foods should be eaten sparingly. But it isn't a "commandment", it is just counsel; a way of living the principle from the New Testament and a code of health found in what they refer to as "modern revelation" more fully.

Answer:

Most devout Mormons choose to adhere to a health code called the Word of Wisdom. That code requires abstinence from alcohol, tea/coffee, tobacco, and other addictive substances. It encourages the use of whole grains and fresh produce, and discourages the use of meat (except in winter and famine).

Another answer:

Mormons are allowed to eat and drink whatever they want. It is more of a standard in our church to follow -- mainly not drinking or doing drugs. it is a personal choice for you.

Another answer:

Well, technically, we are allowed to drink or eat anything. But, we have a standard called the Word of Wisdom that we follow. It tells us that we should not drink tea or coffee, or any alcoholic drinks. We should not use tobacco. But, we should eat lots of grains, fruits and vegetables, and herbs. We should not eat meat excessively. We have these standards because this is what is best for our selves and our bodies. Tea (from the tea plant-not herb tea), coffee, alcohol and tobacco are addictive and do no good for us. If you think about it, they say that 1 small glass of red wine before bed every day is very healthy, but you can get all the same nutrients (and better because you are skipping the alcohol) from just eating grapes. And, it is hard to stop at 1 small glass of wine. Tobacco does nothing good. You have serious health issues, your appearance is destroyed, and you are addicted to it. Why subject your self to this? Eating healthy gives you advantages over others. You become more energized, more healthy, you do better in school, and you are overall more happy.

We follow these standards because we value our bodies as gifts from God, so we want to take care of them. We know that we are given great blessings from obeying the Word of Wisdom and that this is one of the ways that we will be happiest.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) can eat and wear whatever they want. Most members of the Church choose to follow the health code and dress standards suggested by Church leaders because they believe that Church leaders have received these directions from God. Both the heath code (the "Word of Wisdom") and the dress standards are quite subjective and are up to the interpretation of the individual.

The health code (called the "Word of Wisdom") was revealed to Joseph Smith in 1833. It prohibits "wine and strong drinks", "tobacco", and "hot drinks". It encourages the use of "wholesome herbs", "all grains" and "the fruit of the vine" while advising that meat is "to be used sparingly." Modern Church leaders have added illegal drugs (or abuse of prescription drugs) and energy drinks (or any drink containing "harmful or addictive substances"). Most Mormons interpret this health code to mean they should not use alcohol products, tobacco, drugs, tea, and coffee. Some Mormons will drink herbal teas and Hot Chocolate, others will not. Some will drink sodas, others will not. They are advised to pray and figure out for themselves how to interpret the Word of Wisdom.

The dress standards are much less official and have changed a lot over time. Mormons have always been advised to follow the dress guidelines found in the Bible (by dressing modestly and not cross-dressing.) The Book of Mormon strongly advises against "costly apparel" several times. The first clothing guidelines given from Church leaders were given to Joseph Smith in 1831. They said that clothing should be simple and "the work of your own hands". [Doctrine and Covenants 42:40] Later clothing guidelines, such as those given by Brigham Young in the 1860's, say to "create your own fashions and make your own clothing" while avoiding "tight clothes" and "skirts cut so short we can see the tops of the stockings" [Discourses of Brigham Young pp. 216-217] Modern clothing guidelines no longer emphasize making your own clothing, but rather altering store-bought clothing to be modest, if necessary. They say to avoid "short shorts and skirts, tight clothing, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and other revealing attire" including clothing that does not cover the shoulders and anything "low-cut in the front or the back ". They also say to "avoid extremes in clothing, appearance, and hairstyle" and "avoid being sloppy or inappropriately casual in dress, grooming, and manners".

You can read the Word of Wisdom and the Modern clothing standards below, as well as see some examples of what Mormons consider appropriate clothing.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the 'Mormon" church) may eat whatever they want.

Most Mormons choose to follow a reccomended dietary code which they believe was revealed by God to the Prophet Joseph Smith. This code, called the Word of Wisdom, advocates a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and herbs. It suggests using meat sparingly and prohibits the consumption of tobacco, 'strong drinks' (alcohol), and 'hot drinks' (coffee and tea). Recent Church leaders have also added 'habit-forming substances' such as caffeine and illegal drugs, as well as abuse of presciption medication.

Not so much by way of strict prohibition, but rather by guidance. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or Mormons) adhere to a revelation titled "A Word of Wisdom," given to the prophet Joseph Smith in February of 1833 and contained in Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants. In it, the Lord reveals a plan for living well by avoiding certain foods and substances ("strong wine," coffee, tea, and tobacco are specifically mentioned), eating meat "sparingly," and making full use of grains and "wholesome herbs and fruits."

Some members have extrapolated that caffeine, the addictive substance found in coffee and tea, must therefore also be avoided. However, drinking caffeinated drinks, such as soda, while not particularly healthy does not mean that the individual is considered to be in violation of this revelation. Also, not strictly living the Word of Wisdom does not jeopardize one's membership in the church.

This Word of Wisdom comes with a specific promise: those who keep it and "do all these sayings" will run and not be weary, walk and not faint, and the "destroying angel" will pass by them.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) may eat any foods available to them which they enjoy. Mormons are expected to follow a health code which prohibits the consumption of Alcoholic Beverages, coffee, most teas, tobacco, illegal drugs and 'addictive substances'. It also encourages a diet high in grains, fruits, and vegetables, with meats used sparingly.

Of course, everyone has different taste preferences and is accustomed to different foods, but there is no one food that all 15 million Mormons do not eat.
