The Nazi Stormtroopers (SA - Sturmabteilung) were originally set up in 1921(?) to 'maintain order' at Nazi meetings. This meant that they fought left-wing elements who attended their public meetings in order to disrupt them. In the early 1930s the SA fought street battles with left-wing paramilitaries in Berlin and other major cities. When the Nazis seized power the SA terrorized opponents and set up the early concentration camps. In effect the Stormtroopers were Nazi paramilitaries. They wore distinctive brown uniforms and were nicknamed 'brownshirts' (and another, very obvious and unflattering nickname was also used).
Until 1934 they were a powerful force and for a time Hitler saw them as a threat. On 30 June 1934 Hitler had the leadership of the Stormtroopers purged off and the SA became a huge and rather unnimportant mass organization. For example, most German Protestant professors of theology joined! The SA was mobilized on 10 November 1938 to beat up Jews and destroy their homes and business.
Nazi rallies were like normal rallies but leaded by the Nazis and it use to spread Nazi Propagana.
