In the southwest, Oklahoma is on the Ozark Plateau, which is higher in elevation and has low mountains which extend into Arkansas and Missouri.

In the southeast, the land is characterized by large rivers and the Winding Stair Mountains, which is part of the Ouachita Mountains. In the far southeastern corner, swamps, somewhat similiar to the bayous of Louisiana are found.

In the central part of the state, Oklahoma is primarily long-grass prairie of flat land and rolling hills, a part of the Great Plains, which extends south into Texas and north through Canada. South central Oklahoma has the Arbuckle Mountains; low mountains that were once as high as the Rocky Mountains, now reduced to rocky hills. These mountains are among the oldest in North America, older than the Rockies or the Appalachians.

The Southwestern part of the state is home to the beautiful Wichita Mountains, which stretch about 80 miles. These old mountains look like the stereotype of the southwestern United States; with cactus, mesquite, and scrub brush, drier conditions, and huge boulders.

The Panhandle, or northwestern part of Oklahoma, is the high plains, with flat, largely arid land, dotted with mesas and canyons. The plant life is scrub with few trees. It is common to see tumbleweeds traverse the lonely roads. The far northwest tip of the Panhandle touches into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
