Romania is culturally at the crossroads of Eastern Central Europe and south-east Europe. In many parts of Transylvania German and Hungarian influnces are strong - at least in the architecture. Moldavia and Wallachia have a more Eastern European flavour, with influences from Byzantium.

Since about 1920 Romania has often looked to France for cultural inspiration.
