The great railroad strike of 1877 paralyzed many cities and states
The Republican who became president in 1876 through a deal between Party leaders was Rutherford B. Hayes. His opponent Samuel Tilden won the popular vote.
Rutherford Hayes became President because he make a deal with the southern States to pull the troops out of the south if they would cask their elector votes for for him and this would take away the protection of the newly free Black people. Rutherford B. Hayes and George W. Bush did not win the poplars but, they both became president because of the elector votes, so poplar votes did not win election.
He won the popular and electoral vote. Actually he didn't win the popular vote and thought he had lost the election. In a nutshell, he became president when he was able to broker a "backroom" deal with the Democrats.
The confederate states most affected by the Compromise of 1877 were Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. It was the deal made by Republicans so that southern democrats accepted Rutherford Hayes as the President.
The supposed deal was that the Democrats would not protest the very close election of Hayes in 1876 if federal troops were withdrawn from the defeated Southern states.
The Compromise of 1877 was an informal, unwritten deal that settled the disputed 1876 U.S. Presidential election. Through it, Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was awarded the White House over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden on the understanding that Hayes would remove the federal troops that were propping up Republican state governments in South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana.
Rutherford B. Hayes was made president. The election of1876 was probably the most disputed presidential election in American history (which may come as a surprise to those who remember Bush v. Gore in 2000). Rutherford B. Hayes was the Republican candidate and Samuel J. Tilden was the Democrat candidate. in the popular vote, and had 184 electoral votes to Hayes's 165, with 20 votes uncounted. Tilden won the popular vote, but American presidential elections are not decided by popular vote, but by the Electoral College. Tilden had 184 electoral votes to Hayes's 165, with 20 votes uncounted. The Democrats and Republicans struck a deal. Basically, in exchange for giving the election to the Replublicans, Ulysses S. Grant (who was a Republican and the sitting President) would end Reconstruction in the south.
The controversial victory by Rutherford B. Hayes in the 1876 presidential election in America had a very significant effect upon Reconstruction in the South. Gaining the presidency in a hotly contested election was only possible for Hayes through an arrangement with congressional Democrats (that is, Democratic Party leaders): his part of the deal included the removal of all Federal troops from Southern states, which thereby allowed the "old South" to regain power and practically end Reconstruction efforts.

Compromise of 1877How
Often not very well. It was actually the Thirteenth Amendment which freed the slaves, not the Emancipation Proclaimation. Unfortunately, when Rutherford B. Hayes began President, he had to do some wheeling and dealing with the House of Representatives (he actually lost the popular vote) and part of the deal was to undo Reconstruction, the program than was supposed to advance the former slaves to full citizenship.
