What are Strands off genetic material floating in the nucleus called?

[Edit]

Deoxyribonucleic acid, or better known as DNA. But the visible strands under a common microscope are no single strands of DNA but a strand bound wrapped around itself many times its actual size. This occurs when the cell is undergoing replication and the DNA has to be bound into chromosomes to protect them during replication.
