Timing belts, as a rule, should be replaced every 30,000 miles. They symptoms are, rough idle, hard starts, backfireing through the manifold, diesling (when you turn off the ignition and the motor coughs and gasps for a few more revolutions) loss of power, fast idle, there are a lot more things....too many to list with out writing a novel!
This vehicle does not come w/ timing belt. It has a timing CHAIN. No known problems. They can get loose when engine reaches very high mileage.
One of the symptoms of a broken timing belt is the very loud sound that comes from the vehicle when you try to turn it on. Even though it is loud, the car will not start.
The 02 Chevy S10 with a 4 cylinder or a 6 cylinder does not have a timing belt.
No start, no compression.
No start.
Some of the symptoms or clues you might see if your timining belt is going bad are regular problems starting your car, excess exhaust emission, unusual engine noises, the car shakes and the engine rattles or the car shuts off unexpectedly. Some of these can be symptoms of other problems, but you should definitely have your car checked because if the timing belt or chain breaks it can cause serious additional damage to your vehicle.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN THE ENGINE OVER IF YOU SUSPECT A BROKEN TIMING BELT !!!!!! If you have, you already have more problems than a broken timing belt. Remove the upper timing belt cover and physically look at the timing belt.
If your car has the 2.8V6 it has a timing chain. If your car has the 2.54 cylinder engine it has timing gears. Neither has a timing belt or the problems that come with one.
engine cranks over but will not start.
The belt could be wearing but not show any problems. When the belt stretches the timing will jump and the engine will run rough. If the belt breaks then the engine wont run at all.
Replacing the timing belt on an Interference engine, and doing it wrong, can cause serious problems. Busted piston, bent valve, cracked head, are a few.
No start, internal engine damage.
