What are The Twilight Zone robots?

There have been many robots featured in theTwilight Zone. In the original series, robots appeared in episodes such as "Elegy", "The Lonely", "I Sing the Body Electric", "In His Image" and "The Lateness of the Hour". The robots or androids from these stories were human in appearance-occasionally believing they were human-and were generally portrayed by actors without the use of makeup or relying heavily on trademark robotic mannerisms.

One exception is "The Lonely", where the robot speaks in a halting manner, is often confused by human actions and emotions, and has its interior parts and wires displayed at one point. Others would be "Steel", in which humanoid robots are used in boxing matches, and "The Mighty Casey", in which a robot learns to play Baseball before being discovered as a machine by his lack of a heartbeat.

The most visually recognizable robot used in the 1959 series was the popular Robby the Robot, who appeared twice, with a starring role in the episode "Uncle Simon" as well as a minor cameo in "One for the Angels", as a toy in a store window. This robot-actually an actor in a 6-foot, 11-inch tall mechanical suit- is more commonly known for his appearances in the series Lost in Space and the feature sci-fi film, Forbidden Planet.

Also appearing in the first series were the miniature prop aliens used in the episode "The Invaders". Although in the story these are not robots at all, but humanoid explorers, the props used behave in a robotic manner and are visually strange and metallic.

The later series and films moved away from robots and focused more on holograms and Virtual Reality to explore ideas of technology, although one episode of the short-lived 2002 series, "Hunted", did feature a plot with robots.
