Kelp needs to withstand ocean currents, so it's roots/ hold fast is adapted to dig deep into the rocks and soil to make sure it doesn't drift anywhere.

Kelp also has a very strong, fast growing stipe (stem), with floats (gas filled compartments that help the blades reach the sunlight at the surface), as this is where photosynthesis takes place, as well as mineral absorption as roots are used as anchors only. Many species can adapt their blades to their local environment, for example the blades may be wide in calm waters and thinner in exposed areas.

Many species also have their meristem in their stipe allowing them to regenerate if blades are ripped off or grazed.

What are some kelp adaptations?

There are many different kinds of kelp, so there are some variations in their adaptations. Some of the commonly-seen kelp adaptations include reproducing by releasing spores instead of seeds, which appears to be more successful for kelp, and growing small air bladders along the stems so that the kelp is able to "stand" upright. Kelp also grows extremely fast, so even though many animals eat it, it is able to survive.
