Not only do non-toxic fungi make up some of the food we consume, they also contribute to a chemical-waste cleanup process called Bioremediation.
Fungi, unlike us, do not digest food internally. Fungi break down their food EXTERNALLY by essentially ralphing up their digestive enzymes into the surrounding environment. These enzymes have been discovered to successfully break down toxic chemicals we spill (such found in oil spills).
We can exploit the enzymes produced by fungi to reduce pollutant wastes in our environment, without having to worry about toxic byproducts.
As for the disadvantages of fungi...they are not particularly pleasing to the eye?? haha, well some look interesting...check out the Stinkhorn mushroom.
The advantages of mushrooms are the nutritional content. Mushrooms are beneficial for high cholesterol, cancers, and Diabetes. A disadvantage to mushrooms is some are toxic and can cause illness.
