Disadvantages: They tend to be highly processed and high in saturated fat so have less nutritional value and are High GI so don't keep the consumer feeling full for very long before they must eat again. They don't tend to work out very cheap compared to vegetables and meat either. Advantages: They're quick and require minimal preparation, especially if one is exhausted or in a rush. Frozen meals are great for taking to work and one only has to wash a fork or spoon afterward. Kids eat them.

First of all, a chemical called Bisphenol A is in the epoxy resin lining, and they've found that BPA is something you REALLY don't want to mess with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A#Health_effects Second, things in cans tend to have lots of sodium, and perhaps they're not as pretty as something in a jar where you can look at it before you buy it and open it up. Third, to can it they had to cook it within an inch of its life, and raw vegetables are much better for you and lightly cooked vegetables are often more palatable than canned. In defense of canned foods, you know they were picked and canned at their peak of ripeness, while the food in the produce section has sat in a warehouse for maybe even a couple of years. If I can't get tomatoes hot off the farmer's market in summer, I prefer to use canned tomatoes for everything except things like Sandwiches. Though you may want to avoid canned tomatoes altogether in light of the BPA thing, especially if you are feeding kids.

Canned food, whether purchased from a store or canned at home, advantages are:

  • It is preserved for many years.

If canned at home, more advantages are:

  • Home canned foods do not contain the additives and preservatives that store bought foods have.
  • Taste! Home canned foods taste better than store bought ones.
  • Foods can often be purchased locally.

Disadvantages of store bought canned foods:

  • They contain additives and preservatives that may be harmful to health.
  • Labeling is sometimes deceiving. An example is use of the word "natural," which is not defined and can mean almost anything.
  • For those who are attempting to eat "GMO-free," it is almost impossible to find canned foods that do not contain GMO ingredients even if the are labeled "Non-GMO Project" or "100% organic," especially if they contain any corn, soy, canola, papaya, etc. ingredients.

Disadvantages of home canned foods:

  • Cost, especially when first starting to can your own foods. A large water bath canner, large pressure canner, jars, lids, etc. must be purchased. Lids must be thrown away after opening and new ones must be purchased.
  • Time. Canning takes a lot of time and effort, though many enjoy canning.
  • Finding a source for the foods you want can be a challenge sometimes, unless you grow your own, though farmer's markets often have a good variety.
