Buddhism is often described as a religion[1] and a collection of various philosophies, based initially on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as Gautama Buddha.[2] To many, however, Buddhism is not a religion, nor a philosophy or a set of doctrines, but rather teachings to guide one to directly experiencing reality. [3] [4] Buddhism is also known as Buddha Dharma or Dhamma, which means roughly the "teachings of the Awakened One" in Sanskrit and Pali, languages of ancient Buddhist texts. Buddhism began around 5th century BCE with the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in what is now Nepal and taught primarily in northern India, and is hereafter referred to as "the Buddha." Well many people may not know that many Buddhists believe that Siddhārtha Gautama is not the only Buddha. And that when his teachings have been forgotten another being will come forward and reach enlightenment and then bring Buddhist teachings to the world again. This strongly suggests that Buddhas manifest in cycles connected to the needs of beings.

There are other explanations about the manifestations of Buddhas but these are more esoteric, for example we could say that a fully enlightened being is beyond the limitations of space and time so all Buddhas are potentially present everywhere all the time.

There are two main branches of Buddhism, the Theravada and the Mahayana.

The Mahayana can be further divided into sub-branches. The four primary sub-branches of Mahayana Buddhism are:

  • Ch'an/Zen
  • Vajrayana (also known as Tibetan Buddhism)
  • Pure Land
  • Nichiren
In many Mahayana temples there is combining of some of these four, especially Zen and Pure Land. There are probably more temples in the world that combine Zen and Pure Land than there are temples that are pure Zen or pure Pure Land.
