There are over 300 species of animals that have pouches, or belong to the marsupial infraclass. The more well known of these include wombats, koalas, possums, opossums (yes they are different), gliders, kangaroos, wallaroos, and wallabies; the lesser known include trioks, dorcopsises, pademelons, bettongs, rat kangaroos, and potoroos. Most of these animals live naturally only in Australia and the surrounding islands.

This is the group of mammals known as marsupials.

While the vast majority of marsupials have pouches, they do not all carry their young in pouches. The numbat is a marsupial which does not have a pouch.
