The word "asses" means "several donkey-like animals". An ass is a mule, and is a cross between a horse and a donkey and the offspring are sterile. Therefore, when a horse and donkey mate, the resulting baby is one-generation only-- the offspring mule cannot reproduce with an ass, donkey, or mule because the mule is permanently sterile.
