Best Answer

Some automatic transmissions use brake bands to stop or hold a clutch drum from turning. The brake band can be static that is the bandreleases at the appropriate time such as the Powerglide Low Band or holds for reverse. When the band is applied during a gear to a spinning clutch drum to stop the drum from spinning the band is said to be a dynamic shifting band, such as the 4L60E 3/4 Band. Thus there two types of friction materials: Static friction material is hard with a high sheer strength. While dynamic friction materials are more sponge like holding oil, as the band is applied the oil is squeezed out dissipating heat. Dynamic friction materials come in a wide range of colors and holding properties rated by their coefficient of friction.

No reverse automatic transmission 2002 kia rioShifter wont go into park and there is no reverse. Transmission howls but drives good?

If the automatic transmission on a 2002 Kia Rio won't go into park and there is no reverse, there is a problem inside the transmission with the gear bands. Each gear has a separate band and sometimes they wear out. New bands need to be put in or a new transmission needs to be installed.
