Automatons are early machines that use precision-engineered gears to move like robots. One of the most famous automatons is 'The Writer' by Pierre Jacques-Druz, a small mechanical boy that can write, and Jacques Vaucarson's mechanical duck that can digest the food it eats. These automatons are yet non-adaptive and can only simply follow instructions. They carry out a series of tasks for a set period of time. A human operator is also needed to check on the automaton, the environment, and to provide the requirements the automaton needs.
