Obviously, if you kill your prisoner, you don't have to feed him (or her), or provide a secure jail cell for him - this is a problem in some countries, such as the UK, where the death penalty is illegal and 'gaols' (as jails are called in the UK) are overflowing. Also, a dead criminal cannot escape, and this negates any risk at all of reoffending.
These factors have been put rather bluntly, and I suggest that if you use them, you present them a bit more tactfully.
One other, often overlooked, factor, is the moral angle. On the one hand, there may be crimes, such as 1st degree murder or rape, which demand punishment far worse than life imprisonment, and there may be criminals for whom imprisonment is not a punishment, or who are likely to escape. In such cases it would be wise to have the death penalty available for judges to administer. On the other hand, whenever a power such as this is entrusted to the government, the possibility is opened up of its abuse. There are always stories where evidence which surfaces long after the case is declared closed proves a convicted man innocent; if the man is dead, there is little that can be done. I'm sure you can think of other situations like this. It's a difficult moral issue, and one that each country must decide for itself.
Remember that if you answer your own question like you just did, it doesn't show up on the 'unanswered' list, and people are far less likely to answer it for you. Just a tip. :)
