The Boom Operator on a movie set is a person who is the second in command in the Sound Department. Her/His duties include holding what is called a Boom Pole, which is a long fiber or aluminum pole, which typically has a shotgun mic affixed to the end, over the heads of the actors to pick up their dialog. The boom operator must be careful to keep the mic as close as possible to the people speaking, but out of view of the camera lens.
Other important duties of the boom operator including putting wireless mics on actors, wiring vehicles for sound, and "planting" mics around the set to pick up dialog and ambiance.
You can read more, below, but primarily, "The principal responsibility of the boom operator is microphone placement..."
The Production Sound Mixer on a movie set is the person in charge of the Sound Department. Their main function is to make all the decisions about how to record the dialog and sound effects for the movie. They also are the person who operates the recorder that captures the sound coming from the microphones used to record the sound. The typical movie sound department will also have a person who is called the Boom Operator, who is the person who holds a boom pole and microphone over the actors while they talk, as well as one or more sound assistants.
As a Production Sound Mixer and Boom Operator, my advice on the best way to become a Boom Operator is to introduce yourself to a sound mixer, tell them you're interested in learning the craft and would like to visit the set and watch. You could also volunteer to assist at no cost in doing things the mixer allows you to do. That way, during breaks, the mixer and the boom op can show you how they do the job. A good boom operator is important and often hard to find so if you have what it takes, you could find yourself in a new career.
