Please see Are buckeyes toxic. The Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) and Illinois buckeye, also called American buckeye, fetid buckeye, and stinking buck-eye, is non-edible for humans-- it is toxic and poisonous! However, eastern fox squirrels will consume buckeyes as 2 to 5% of its diet in some seasons. See Ohio Buckeye Hippocastanaceae -- Horsechestnut family.

Some people use buckeyes in crafts, such as wreaths. As long as the inner, shiny shell has not rotted, buckeyes can sit on a shelf as part of a collection.

Not to be confused with the tree Buckeye's nut, some people make a Milk Chocolate candy with exposed peanut butter filling (exposed on the top) that are called "buckeyes" because they look very similar to the shiny nut. But again, this is not the tree nut-- buckeyes from buckeye trees should never, ever be eaten.
