There are many causes of infertility in women, but this should not allow us to forget that it may the man who is infertile. Men and women are each responsible for 40% of infertility in infertile couples and the remaining 20% is accounted for by mixed/joint factors. Semen analysis should be the first investigation to be done after a good history is taken by the doc, because it is cheap, easy and non-invasive.
Causes of infertility in a woman may be:
- Congenital, such as absent uterus as is the case in CAIS.
- Hormonal, which would prevent ovulation from taking place.
- Other metabolic imbalances, such as hyperthyroidism, liver disease, kidney disease, obesity and over-skininess (anorexia).
- Physical defects, such as fibroids in the uterus, a malformed uterus, etc. Blocked tubes due to infection is also a cause.
