A coliform count is a microbiological assay of the number of coliform-type bacteria living in a certain sample. This is often used as a measure of fecal contamination of water supplies.

Coliform bacteria are Faculatative anaerobic Gram negative, non-spore forming lactose fermenting bacilli, members of the family enterobacteriacea. They are common isolates from fecal samples and are well distributed through fecal contaminated environments. Coliforms are used as indicators of fecal contamination of food and water with Escherichia coli being the type species for fecal contamination due to its ability to ferment lactose at 44 degrees celcius. Other notable members of the group include Citrobacter, Providencia, Enterobacter, Klebsiella and Serratia. Members can be pathogenic but are generally harmless to organisms with an intact immune system. Close relatives to this group of bacteria include the Pathogens Salmonella and Shigella.

The e-coliform is a family of bacteria which lives in the human intestine. They generally are not dangerous but may contain colonies which may cause dysentery, thypoid and para-thyphoid. They can easily be counted in laboratory analysis tests. The result will indicate of the amount of human waste present in a particular sewage sample. The result of this test is called e-coli counted and is expressed per 100ml IMO suggest 250 fecal coliforms/100ml

What is the Excessive numbers of other bacteria in a sample that can interfere with counting coliform is called?

The excessive numbers of other bacteria in a sample that can interfere with counting coliform is called bacterial interference or bacterial overgrowth. This can lead to inaccurate results when trying to quantify coliform bacteria in the sample.
