Anaphylaxis is a severe allergy and is a major over-reaction of the immune system and can be life threatening. Early symptoms may be mild, such as skin rash, runny nose or feeling strange. However, in some cases these symptoms can become severe rather quickly.

A classic allergic reaction is an IgE mediated reaction to a substance (drug, food, venom, etc) that produces symptoms ranging from bothersome to life-threatening, depending on the strength of the allergic reaction.
Mild symptoms: itchy eyes, runny nose, itching, rash, hives, sneezing, eczema/atopic dermatitis.
Severe symptoms: difficulty breathing, wheezing, tongue and airway swelling, hypotension, edema, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, loss of consciousness, and death.
If you develop mild symptoms, you can take benadryl and try to avoid the cause of the reaction (if you know it).
If you develop any of the severe symptoms, you can take a benadryl if you are able, but you should also go to the nearest emergency room, or call 911 if you develop difficulty breathing or mouth/airway swelling.
People with known anaphylactic reactions to certain allergens (bee stings, peanuts, etc), your physician may prescribe an epinephrine injector pen (Epi-Pen) for you to carry around with you in case you are exposed to that allergen or you develop severe symptoms after exposure to any substance. You should still go to the ER if you use your Epi-Pen for evaluation.
