Currently (in 2014) the most expensive wooden caskets available in the US probably are:

1) Batesville's (Marsellus) "Masterpiece", the successor to the "Masterpiece" # 700, originally manufactured by the former Marsellus casket company of Syracuse, NY. It is made from solid 2" and 3" select grade ribbon grained African mahogany planks, coming from trees which are about 500 years old; the planks are assembled with copper nails and brass screws. The casket is equipped with a high quality velvet interior. The production of the "Masterpiece" takes about 8 month, just the final hand rubbing a whole day. The casket weighs between 400 to 500 lbs and has a retail price range between US $ 16,000 (Online casket retailer) and 40,000 (manufacturer's suggested retail price). The casket has a rather bulky, somewhat baroque looking design which intends to makes sure that it shows every single dollar it costs. President Reagan was buried in one of the last original Marsellus Masterpieces. Unlike its Batesville successor, the original Marsellus #700 could be equipped (at extra cost) with a hermetically sealing inner bronze liner with a bronze or oval glass top. 32 oz copper or bronze liners with full length glass lid weigh between 200 and 250 lbs and cost approximately half the price of a standard 32oz copper or bronze casket. These inner liners are no longer in production in the US. Instead, protective burial vaults are used nowadays, which can cost up to $ 28,000, if they are lined with copper or bronze.

2) The "Monarch Elite", offered by The Golden Casket Co. It is a solid cherry casket in square corner design, hand carved and gilded with 24 karat gold, selling for about 40.000 $. It is available as a half couch (split lid) model as well as a full couch (undivided top) with an inner foot panel. One of these caskets was given as a weird gift to Zsa Zsa Gabor in her old age. Cherry caskets are hardwood caskets in the upper middle price range. Without the hand carving and the gilding, the "Monarch Elite" with its relatively simple, square shaped design might be available at prices between $ 3,000 and 6,000 already.

3) Next in price range are the 3" and 4" plank mahogany caskets manufactured by the New England casket company, like the "Renaissance", the "Copley Grande", the "Statesman", the "Condord" or the "Capital". The Australian actor and Hollywood movie director Heath Ledger was buried in a $ 25,000 "Concord" model. The Xiao En Centre in Malaysia offers one of New England 4" mahogany urn style caskets with carved top for an import price of 89.000 Malaysian Ringit (about US $ 36.000).

4) The Batesville (Marsellus) "President", the successor to the original Marsellus # 710 casket. The "Seven Ten" which informally has been called the "Kennedy casket", has become almost synonymous for "the presidential casket" in the US, because it was chosen for the burial of several American Presidents (Kennedy, Ford, Nixon and probably Hoover). The round corner design of timeless simplicity is, in spite of its understatement appearance, a luxury casket made of solid 1 1/4" and 2 1/2" planks of select grade ribbon grained African mahogany coming from trees which are some 500 years old. The casket has a hand rubbed finish and a velvet interior. It has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of about $ 13,000 but is offered by Online retailers at prices starting from $ 6,000 (without carved top, which is between $ 1,000 and 2,000 extra).

5) A similar design like the Batesville / Marsellus "Kennedy casket" is manufactured by the York-Matthews Company under the name "Parliament", offered at retail prices between $ 6,000 and 13,000. An orthodox Jewish metal free version of this design is offered by York-Matthews as the "Hezekiah" model with a manufacturer's retail price of 12.000 US $, but available from Online retailers from 8.000.

6) The York-Matthews "Diplomat", a solid walnut casket with velvet interior, offered at prices between approximately $ 5,000 (Online casket retailers) and 13,000 (manufacturer's suggested retail price).

Why do coffins have to be nailed down?

Only those caskets are air (and water) tight which are "sealer" caskets, meaning that they are provided with a rubber like sealing gasket between the lid and the base of the caskets. Usually only metal caskets can be sealer caskets.

Where can I find funeral caskets in South Carolina.?

You can purchase caskets at most funeral homes and without knowing where you are it is difficult to list the funeral homes you can check with. You can also purchase caskets through casket companies with the assistance of a funeral director or on your own. A couple of companies you can check are the Natural Burial Company at http://www.naturalburialcompany.com/ and Dignified Caskets at http://www.dignifiedcaskets.com/

What companies manufacture or manufactured cast bronze caskets?

Currently (in 2014) there is only one company which produce cast bronze caskets - caskets which are not welded from sheets of wrought sheet bronze, but units which are cast like bells from molten bronze poured into a form - in the US: the York-Matthews company makes the "Pharaoh Sarcophagus" model, a cast bronze casket weighing 1,100 lbs and offered at a manufacturer's suggested list price of $ 270,000, but available from Online casket retailers at a "bargain" price of 160,000. The casket is cast in Italy, but marketed in the US. In the second half of the 20th century, there were still three companies in the US which produced cast bronze caskets: the Boyertown Burial Casket Company, the Springfield Metallic Casket Company and finally the National Casket Company of Boston, which manufactured the famous "Sarcophagus" caskets, one of which was used for the burial of Henry Ford. A cast bronze casket is also shown in the Fine Art Casting Gallery of Kassons Casting, a firm located in Austin, TX. Unfortunately, there is no information given for which casket supplier this unit was casted; perhaps for the SCI corporation, as both firms are from Texas.

How much does a metal burial casket weigh?

Standard metal caskets (20ga steel) weigh around 200 lbs empty. Most solid (sheet) copper or bronze caskets have a weight between 250 and 350 lbs. Copper deposit caskets (made of electrolytically deposited copper) between 600 and 800 lbs. Cast bronze caskets (cast from molten bronze like bells) between 1,000 and 1,200 lbs.

What is the difference in price between a copper deposit casket and a bronze cast casket?

The question is somewhat difficult to answer because copper deposited casket were manufactured until the 1980s only. Cast bronze and copper deposited caskets are the most expensive and the most heavy metal caskets available. While cast bronze caskets weigh between 1,000 and 1,200 lbs, copper deposit caskets have a weight between 600 and 800 lbs. The price difference between these caskets (which were manufactured by the Boyertown Burial Casket Company and by the National Casket Company of Boston) in the 1970s was as follows: cast bronze casket had a wholesale price between US $ 15,000 and 19,000 while copper deposited caskets cost between $ 5,000 and 6,000 wholesale (plus approximately $ 1,000 for an optional silver plated exterior).

What was the Springfield metallic casket company renown for?

The Springfield Metallic Casket Co. was one of the largest US manufacturers of metallic caskets and metal burial vaults. The company was founded in 1884 and soon gained the reputation of being a producer of high quality caskets which could be specified to custom order. Springfield acquired also an excellent reputation as a manufacturer of high end caskets: wrought copper and sheet bronze caskets, oftentimes equipped with a hermetically sealing inner glass lid, as well as cast bronze luxury caskets. At the end of the 1950s the company had 230 employees. The Springfield company was one of the first metal casket manufacturers giving a 50 year warranty which promised that their caskets remained water tight. According to rumors, Springfield provided the caskets of Buffalo Bill Cody in 1917 and also the square bronze casket of Al Capone in 1947, which cost $ 2.000 (retail) at that time. The company seat was in Springfield, Ohio at Main & Mechanic St., but there was also a warehouse and office in Detroit until 1943. The Art Deco building in Detroit was taken over by the Mortuary Science Department of Wayne State University for more than a decade. In the early 1960s the company became a division of Springfield Greene Industries, Inc.; later a subsidiary of A-T-O Corporation of Willoughby, Ohio. These changes were to no avail: the Springfield factory closed in 1974.

What does the number of ounces in the description of copper and bronze burial caskets mean?

While the metal strength and durability of steel caskets is measured in gauge (ga.) - indicating the thickness of the metal - the strength of copper and bronze caskets is usually measured by the weight of the wrought metal sheets from which the caskets are welded together. The sheets used in standard solid copper or bronze caskets have a weight of 32 ounces per square foot, while more expensive caskets use 48oz sheets. Most 32 oz caskets have an empty weight between 200 and 300 lbs, most 48oz caskets between 250 and 350 lbs. In rare cases, 64 oz copper sheets or 96 oz bronze sheets are used for luxury caskets. Exceptions confirm the rule: the measurement in ounces per square foot is not used for top of the line copper and bronze caskets: copper deposit caskets (not welded from copper sheets, but made by a time consuming electrolytic process) usually have a wall thickness of 1/8" (3mm) and an empty weight of approximately 600 to 800 lbs, while cast bronze caskets (which are cast from molten bronze like bells) usually have a weight between 1,000 and 1,200 lbs, which equals that of solid bronze caskets made from sheets with a weight of at least 96 oz.
