Best Answer

DNA is double stranded while rna is single stranded. DNA contains the bases a, g, t, c while RNA contains the bases a, g, c, u. See Protein Synthesis. they are also different because they have different meaning DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid and RNA is ribonucleic acid.

DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid

  1. Found in all living organisms.
  2. DNA consists of a Double strand of nucleotides forming double helix.
  3. Consists of: adenine (a), cytosine (c), guanine (g), and thymine (t).

RNA: ribonucleic acid.

  1. Found in both nonliving (viruses) and living organisms.
  2. RNA consists of a single strand of nucleotides.
  3. Consists of: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), uracil (U).

DNA and RNA are identical in almost every way. They differ in their sugar molecules. DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose, whereas RNA contains the sugar ribose. These two sugars are the same except for one OH (hydroxide) ion (deoxyribose has one OH ion more than ribose). Also, RNA contains the nucleotide uracil in place of the nucleotide thymine. Otherwise, differences are mainly in structure and function. DNA forms a B-form double helix, whereas RNA forms an A-form single helix. DNA is stabler than RNA, and self-replicating. RNA can only be used as a mean to transfer information, and not to store it, largely because it is more reactive due to its one less OH ion.

There are a few basic differences:

  1. The sugar in the RNA (Ribose nucleic acid) backbone is ribose, the sugar in the DNA (Deoxyribose nucleic acid) backbone is deoxyribose.
  2. RNA has four bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and uracil (U). DNA has four bases too: A, C, G and thymine (T).
  3. RNA is usually a single stranded molecule; DNA is usually a double stranded molecule (the famous "double helix.")
  4. RNA can, to some extent, replicate itself; DNA needs enzymes to replicate.
  5. RNA can act as a replicator and an enzyme or "ribozyme"; DNA can only act as a replicator (which is why it needs its own enzymes to replicate).
  6. DNA in eukaryotes is found only in the nucleus; RNA is found in the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
  7. DNA only comes in one basic kind; RNA comes in three major kinds in the cell: messenger RNA, transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA.
  8. RNA is thought to have evolved long before DNA, according to the RNA World hypothesis of the origin of life.

In both DNA and RNA there are four major bases. However, DNA has three that are the same as RNA but they vary in one. The substitution of uracil for thymine as a base material constitutes the chief chemical difference between RNA and DNA.
DNA codes for the entire organism (called the genome) while RNA codes for one protein.
DNA is a double stranded molecule while RNA is a single strand. DNA is much longer than RNA.
RNA is important in the production of proteins and the process of DNA duplication.
It carries the code and double checks so that no errors occur. Some do and the result can be a mutation.

The sugar (ribose vs deoxyribose) is different in RNA and DNA, respectively. Also RNA is single stranded and DNA is double stranded.

DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose. RNA contains the sugar ribose. One of the four nitrogen bases in DNA is thymine, but is replaced by uracil in RNA.

RNA contains the sugar ribose, and the nitrogen base uracil. DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose, and the nitrogen base thymine instead of uracil.
