Any cold, illness, or bacteria you come into contact with could kill you. AIDS attacks the body's white blood cells (they fight off infections + kill foreign invaders) those who suffer from AIDS have little to no immune system so any germ or cold they come into contact with is potentially life threatening. There is no cure for AIDS but medication helps maintain at least a small part of your immune system. In other words, to answer your questions, you could die.

It 'destroys' your immune system. It doesn't kill you, but if you eg. catch a cold you may die from it because you don't have white blood cells to protect your body. However the HIV virus can remain dormant in your body for a very long time and not activate itself into AIDS, and it may not develop into AIDS at all.

When first infected with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) the symptoms are identical to the flu, but then the virus hides inside the T lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell that is part of the immune system) and becomes latent causing no more symptoms.

After the end of the latent period (can be several years to a couple decades) the virus reawakens, it begins killing the T lymphocytes, causing acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS) which results in suppression of the immune system. Without a properly functioning immune system the symptoms are infections and cancers, many of them unusual and/or rare.

Ultimately if not treated to stop the HIV replication a person with AIDS dies of one or more of the infections or cancers that took advantage of the weakened immune system.
