Nonverbal communication involves hand gestures, winks of the eye, and nodding. Body language is a big part of nonverbal communication because a person can tell how another person is feeling just by noting how they are standing.

Body language, stance, facial expressions, and gestures are all non-verbal communication, and are sometimes unintentional.

Non verbal communication is anything that doesn't involve words. Good examples are:

  • Smiling / frowning
  • Rolling one's eyes (shows contempt)
  • Gesturing
  • Touching (pat on the back, touching one's arm)

Note: The American Heritage Dictionary declares the meaning of "verbal" to be ambiguous, as to whether it refers to all word usage or just to the spoken word (and not to the written word). There is consensus though that the term "Non-verbal" refers only to communication without words. Therefore written communication may or may not be verbal, but it is not considered non-verbal. "Sign language" such as ASL is likewise not considered part of the application of the term non-verbal communication.
