Self-disclosure can be made by conscious or unconscious decisions to do so. Some examples of this would be telling a counselor personal information about yourself because you feel that they can help you. Self disclosing is also used in relationships when individuals know their partners on a more personal level, and it is used to build intimacy as well. Someone with an STD would also want to self-disclose to their partner that they have a disease before doing anything.
