Although you could just call him/her and say you want to talk with them i understand that you may not want to do that. So here's some ideas.
1:if someone's birthday is coming up ask him/her advice on what presents you could get them.
2: you could tell him that you were having trouble finding a good book to read and see what they likes. This way you find new books and get to know more about him/her.
3: invite them and some friends if you want to go meet up at a place like the park to hang out.
