President: William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (August 19, 1946 - )

Term: January 20, 1993 - January 20, 2001

Background: Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas to William Jefferson Blythe, Jr. and Virginia Dell Cassidy. He believed in Protestant Christianity. His father was a traveling salesman who passed away in an automobile accident before Clinton was born. His mother traveled to New Orleans to study nursing, which left Clinton living with his grandparents who owned a small grocery store. Clinton went to Yale Law School and obtained a Juris Doctor degree in 1973. He then became the 50th Arkansas Attorney General and was in office from January 3, 1977 to January 9, 1979. Clinton then went on to becoming the 40th and 42nd Governor of Arkansas and his term lasted from January 11, 1983 to December 12, 1992.

Political Party: Democratic

Vice-President: Al Gore

Major Domestic Policy: During Clinton's Presidency in 1993 he began by signing a bill that had been vetoed by both Reagan and Bush. This bill was known as The Family and Medial Leave Act, which required businesses and companies to give their employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave when a immediate death in the family occurred or a medical emergency. The idea of this Act was to give employers a sense of security when in a time of emergency. Clinton then repealed bans on abortion due to the fact that he believed "an America where abortion is safe and legal, but rare." Next, Clinton noticed that growth in the national deficit, causing him to cut federal spending. In this idea, he was hoping to reduce the deficit for the future, and also to give confidence to the economy in the mean time. As President, Clinton also revoked the ban on homosexuals in the military as long that the homosexuals did not par take in any sexual behavior, and remained silence about their preference.

Major Foreign Policy: In February of 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed and was the most critical terrorist attack that the United States had even seen. This year also began the attempts for the President to end nuclear testing around the world. Clinton stated that the United States would end all nuclear tests, in hopes that other countries such as Ukraine and North Korea would halt their testing. Clinton also reached a lot of foreign trade agreements. Japan agreed to lower tariffs to reduce purchaser prices and boost the worldwide living standard. Then the North American Free Trade Agreement was enacted to promote trade with Mexico to help with the creation of export-related jobs in the United States. Also during Clintons Presidency was when the United States hosted a lot of peace talks between the Palestine Liberation Organization Chariman Yasir Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin. Peace negotiations were also established between King Hussein of Jordan and Israel. Bosnia was rising in conflict due to terrorist and guerrilla warfare and because of the blaming of genocide against the Serbian military forces. A plan was devised to split Bosnia into three different areas that consisted of different ethnic groups that would be governed by a weak central government. In the mean time, the capital of Bosnia known as Sarajevo was placed under United States control momentarily.

Major Supreme Court Decisions during his presidency:

• Shaw v. Hunt (1995)-Held that North Carolina's redistricting plan that represents racial gerrymandering was in violation of the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause.

• Montana v. Egelhoff (1996)-Held that a state has the power to control the essentials of a protection in an unlawful suit.

Intellectual and Social Development:

• Republicans took back control in Congress and conservatives cut back on many of the major programs. Federal government task were now given to the states.

• The economy rebounded and had an economic boom.

• The creation of the Internet grew popular and created a new "information revolution."

Clinton's Legacy: Clinton will be remembered for bringing back the Democratic Party into Congress with a good image after the Regan Revolution. He supported Law and Order, individuality, and welfare reform. He also made the Democratic Party more appealing to the whites with the social class in the middle. He was also recognized to have help with the economy and create the 1990's boom in the wealth. Clinton was not able to complete all of his ideas due to his struggle for political endurance. He did have to suffer from impeachment due to his sexual behavior, but he will be known for giving a positive and lasting impact to the Democratic Party.
