1) Poe married his cousin Virginia when he was 27 and she was 13

2) Poe's parents died when he was not quite 3.

3) Poe was not born Edgar Allan Poe. He was born Edgar Poe, but was baptized Edgar Allan Poe by his foster parents, John and Frances Allan, and continued to use the name.

4) Poe was in the military.

5) One of the many UNTRUE rumors possibly started by Poe himself: Poe was supposed to be in a military Parade, and the dress was something along the lines of "White gloves, Belt, Boots" and the next day decided to show up ONLY in said items.

6) Poe was engaged to marry another women closer to the end of his life, but she called it off because Poe could not stop drinking. Later he got engaged to his childhood sweetheart, but died before they could marry.

7) Received only 9 or 10 dollars in writing "The Raven" though he did receive $15 from another publisher friend out of charity.

8) His works have influenced many bands who have gotten their start from Poe such as The Alan Parsons Project and Creature Feature

9) just Days before his death, he was found at a public polling place on election day in a state of delirium.

10) From around 1949 until 2009, a man (or men) visited Poe's grave site on Poe's birthday drinking a toast to him and leaving three roses and the rest of the bottle of Cognac known as the Poe Toaster.

If I stated any unknown facts here they would be known by me thereby making this answer false. Some lesser known facts are:

  • Poe enlisted in the army under the name Edgar A. Perry and served well, rising to the the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest rank an enlisted man can achieve.
  • Poe went to West Point, didn't like it and deliberately got himself court-martialed and kicked out.
  • Poe met Charles Dickens and they made plans for a joint literary venture which never came to fruition.
  • Poe wrote tales of humor and satire as well as tales of Gothic Horror.

Father: David Poe, Jr. (actor, d. before Poe was 3)

Mother: Elizabeth Arnold Poe (actress, d. 1811)

Wife: Virginia Clemm (his cousin, m. 16-May-1836, d. Jan-1847)

Poe attended the University of Virginia...until he had to drop out due to lack of money. It seems that Poe had a gambling problem, and his foster father got tired of bailing him out.

Broke, Poe lied about his age and joined the army. He served two years...and then, much later, got himself dismissed from West Point Military Academy by court martial.

Poe's short stories featuring C. Auguste Dupin shaped the modern mystery story so much that Arthur Conan Doyle compared Sherlock Holmes to Dupin, and the Mystery Writers of America give an award named the Edgar-after Poe, of course.

Poe's bizarre life didn't stop just because he died in 1849. He was buried in an unmarked grave, and when gossip finally led to a stone being ordered, it was destroyed in a train accident.

Ever since 1949, someone has left a bottle of cognac and some roses on Poe's grave. Who is leaving these things? And why
