It seems the sepulchre was only a very short distance from the place where Jesus was crucified, both requiring the destruction of important pagan temples so that a magnificent church could be built. The location is now marked by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It may seem surprising that Joseph of Arimathea, a rich and influential man, would choose to have his own intended burial place so close to where criminals were regularly executed, but Helena claimed to be convinced that these were indeed the locations of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus.
