Best Answer

They first appeared 55 million years ago. The name is from the ancient Greek meaning "lizard", they have a cerebral cortex, unlike other reptiles, they are unable to stick out their tongues, their jaws are the strongest of any animal, the jaws are opened with a weak set of muscles which is why it is so easy to keep their mouths shut when wrestled, they have a slow metabolism, so can go for a long time with no food, many swallow stones to act as ballast, they only run around 7 mph, sex is determined by temperature and not genetics, they can live over 100 years although it is hard to reliably determine their age.

Do American crocodiles have facts?

The most intriguing thing about American crocodiles is despite the fact that they are bigger than American alligators and caimans (and smaller than Nile and saltwater crocodiles), they are not man-eaters like their other relatives and are in fact the one crocodilian subspecies that would not want to attack people. Instead, they are shy and would rather avoid people whenever they can.
