Best Answer

The four large moons (Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa) were discovered by Galileo around 1610.

  • Ganymede is the largest moon, larger than the planet Mercury (though not as massive)
  • Callisto is the second largest moon of Jupiter, and also of the solar system.
  • Io is the third largest, and the 4th largest in the solar system. It is the innermost of the 4 Galilean moons, and is active volcanically. Liquid sulfur is spewed onto the frozen surface, giving the moon a yellow color. The heat comes from the tidal forces exerted by the immense gravity of Jupiter.
  • Europa is thought to have liquid water oceans beneath its surface, the only known existence of liquid water in the solar system besides Earth. The water is covered by a thick, granite-hard crust of ice between 10 to 30 kilometers thick (6 to 19 mi), which displays some impact craters. Europa is slightly smaller than Earth's Moon.
