Sam Houston was born on March 2, 1793 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. His father's name was Major Samuel Houston and his mother's name was Elizabeth Paxton. Sam's father died after serving in the revolutionary war when Sam was fourteen. After his father's death, he, his mother, and his five older brothers moved to the eastern part of Tennessee where Sam grew up with the Cherokee Indians. Soon, he learned their language and customs well. During the second war with England Sam became a private soldier and soon won the admiration and trust of not only his men, but his superiors as well. In the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, he received three near-mortal wounds and retired from the military in 1818 to study law.
