By completing the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson went against his own philosophy concerning anti-federalism and a strict interpretation of the Constitution, but felt that the purchase was necessary to avoid a potential future war with France who controlled the port in Louisiana. Jefferson thought the purchase would lead to a more agrarian society.
He argued land purchases from foreign powers were legally similar to treaties and therefore constitutional.

  • The Louisiana Purchase was finalized on April 30, 1803.
  • The Senate quickly approved the purchase with Jefferson's urging, and the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. This was the biggest bargain in history averaging 3 cents per acre
  • The Louisiana Purchase was also nurturing a deep sense of loyalty among the West to the federal government, and a new spirit of nationalism surged through it.
  • The Treaty of 1818 put the northern boundary of the Louisiana Purchase at the 49th parallel and provided for a ten-year joint occupation of the Oregon Territory with Britain, without a surrender of rights and claims by neither Britain nor America.
  • In 1803 Thomas Jefferson purchased 828,000 square miles of land for 15 million dollars from Napoleon the leader of France. The land mass stretched from the Gulf of Mexico all the to Rocky Mountains and Canada. The purchase of this land sprouted national pride and ensured expansion
