The Russian revolution, also known as the Bolshevik Revolution, or the October Revolution took place in the year 1917. Two revolutions took place that year in Russia, in which the first, known as the February Revolution, when the Tzar of Russia abdicated his throne, and the provisional government took power. The next revolution was, in October, when the Bolshevik's overthrew the provisional government.

The revolution was the culmination of a long period of repression and unrest. From the time of Peter I (Peter the Great), the czardom increasingly became an autocratic bureaucracy that imposed its will on the people by force, with wanton disregard for human life and liberty. As Western technology was adopted by the czars, Western humanitarian ideals were acquired by a group of educated Russians. Among this growing intelligentsia, the majority of whom were abstractly humanitarian and democratic, there were also those who were politically radical and even revolutionary. The university became a seat of revolutionary activity; nihilism anarchism, and later Marxism were espoused and propagated.

In 1903, the communist party split between the bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. The first comunist police were know as Cheka&cheka. Vladamir Lenin signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk to get out of WW1. Lenin introdudced the NEP(new economic policy) because of how unpopular his policy of War Communism was.
