Captain Edward John Smith was the Titanic's first and only captain. Planning to retire after the Titanic's maiden voyage, he went down with the ship when it sank on April 12, 1912 in 2:00 A.M.

In 1912, RMS Titanic was supposed to arrive New York City on April 17th. Instead, she hit a berg in the North Atlantic and sunk. Afterwards, the Carpathia arrived there with over 700 survivors.

Some facts about the disaster itself:

-The Titanic was the biggest and most technologically advanced ship in the world at the time--it was also said to be the safest because of anti-sinking technology.
-The ship left port at Southampton on April 10th, 1912, traveling from England to New York.
-The ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on April 14th and sank two hours later.
-Out of about 2220 people on board, around 1500 were killed and 700 were saved. Most of the dead died of hypothermia due to freezing water temperatures.
-There were insufficient lifeboats for all of the passengers, hence one of the reasons why so many died.
-The Carpathia, which was 58 miles from the Titanic when it radioed for help, rescued the survivors around four hours later, putting itself at great risk.
-A disproportionate number of men were among the dead due to the traditional "women and children first" rule.
-Also disproportionate was the number of dead from each class--around a third of first-class passengers, half of second-class passengers, two thirds of third class passengers, and two thirds of crew were lost. This was due to confusion and the inability for all passengers to get to the boat deck in time (but NOT because passengers were locked in their cabins--no passengers were deliberately kept below decks).
-Many shipping laws changed after the disaster, namely, the laws regarding lifeboats: every ship carrying over fifty passengers was required to provide enough lifeboats for every passenger.

Other, general information:

The Titanic disaster is not something that can necessarily be blamed on one thoughtless entity. A combination of smaller factors, some beyond human control, led to the catastrophic magnitude of the ship's destruction, as well as the high number of dead. Some were due to older laws that had simply not been updated (ex: the number of lifeboats required was based on tonnage, not the number of passengers). Some were a lack of foresight (it didn't occur to anyone that lifeboats would need to be used to sail on the open ocean--rescues were typically accomplished by another ship arriving on time and anchoring across from the foundering ship, using the lifeboats as a ferry to transport passengers from one ship to another). Some were simply bad luck (there was no moon and no waves to indicate the presence of icebergs; the iceberg struck a spot on the hull that just happened to be more vulnerable; no ships could provide rescue, either because they happened to be out of range of the Titanic at the time or could not hear their distress calls; the water was too cold to be survivable, etc.).

The disaster also happened at a fairly opportune time. Because of the Titanic sinking, laws in desperate need of updating were updated, and many new safety measures were enacted. This happened just in time for World War I, which would see many naval battles--had these safety measures not been put in place, many, many more would have died at sea during the war.

Titanic's captain was Edward John Smith. He was the highest paid captain on the seas and he had the most luxurious stateroom afloat. He worked his way up and was the 'Gentleman's Captain'; and everybody wanted to sit at his table. He was such a favorite of the White Star Line that he was on the maiden voyages for the Adriatic, the Majestic, the Baltic, the Olympic, and Titanic. And he knew New York Harbor well. He had been to New York on Olympic alone at least nine times.

There are many facts concerning Titanic - and many more being discovered.

Here's one now: Contrary to the movie scene, Titanic (as all the other White Star liners) was never christened.

Disregarding the blatant flaw in the wording of the question, some great offline sources of information regarding the Titanic include the The Titanic (DK Eyewitness Books), a book about the Titanic targeted at children, Unsinkable: The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, a novelistic approach to the sinking of the Titanic, and lastly, Titanic First Accounts, a book of first hand accounts of survivors from that fateful night.

I found lots of general information on Google. If you are looking for articles on specific areas and artifacts found and trivial things like that, I suggest encyclopedia-titanica.
