Early on the fighting went in the unions favor. Some confederate soldiers began to turn back, but one general from Virginia told his men to hold there place that person was Thomas "StoneWall" Jackson- StoneWall was his nickname for staying in place. As more confederates arrived the tide turned in there favor. The union soldiers retreated.
