During the medieval times, the lords and knights used to offer the common man protection in return for their labor. The labor involved toiling day and night on the fields of the masters and living a hand-to-mouth existence. Around this time, legend has it that an outlaw, Robin Hood and his friends made Sherwood Forest their home. Robin Hood was in love with a maid, Marian. This is probably the reason why the forest's proximity to the village was capitalized on by him.

Legend has it that he led a band of fellow outlaws and together they were called the Merry Men. Their notorious attempts to rob those with plenty, to provide justice to the poor, robbed villagers, have been highlighted in a number of stories and films. Robin Hood was known as 'tormentor of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham'. There has been little doubt that Robin Hood is a creation from a loose resemblance to a real person who lived in the medieval.

The earliest reference to this Prince of Thieves dates back to the 14th Century. This is indicative of the possibility that if at all the legendary hero did exist, then it was possibly during the century prior to that. He has been referred to as Robert Hod and even Hobbehod. There has been a reference to a son of a forester Adam Hood called Robert Hood, in the 1850's. The record states that he was born in 1280. His wife's name on record is Matilda and they lived in Yorkshire. This revelation only makes the tale all the more exciting and real.

Research has also revealed that in 1261, one William de Fevre was declared as an outlaw and in time, he took on the nickname Robin Hood. In fact, the records reveal that the name 'Robin Hood' actually became generic for outlaws.

Whether or not the legend of Robin Hood is fact or fiction provokes deliberation even to this day. To children and rebellious youth, Robin is a consistent source of inspiration and a history they so badly want to prove real. However, the historical evidence on this legendary character is pretty elusive. The limited and diverse claims on his true identity and the persistent search for definitive answers is what fuels the lamp of the legend to this day.

The tales woven around Robin Hood tell of the age-old 'triumph of good over evil', but it is his rebellious nature that is most appealing to world audiences. The fact that amidst the vigilance of the knights and feudal lords the relationship between Robin and Marian blossomed, he was able to pursue his lifestyle defying authority and the bonding between fellow outlaws, is what makes the tale so enigmatic.

His home of the magical forest and tree top dwellings counter, the exploitative imagery of castles, knights and court rolls. The popularity of this character can be best observed from the screen appearances by Errol Flynn, and Sean Connery, in the title role.

There are way to many variations of the legend to keep track of ! Here are some basic facts concerning the legend of Robin Hood : He was originally named Robin of Locksley (Locksley was his manor) . He lived around the time period of King Richard, (who was known for his love of crusades and only spent one out of his many years as king in England and Not on a crusade in the holy Land (Jerusalem)). His nick name, "Lion heart" came from his love of crusades. In the kings absence, His ill- favored brother, Prince John ruled in his stead. John was known for his treachery, deceit, and greed for money. He heavily taxed the people causing them to use their bread money to pay him un-needed taxes !( This is the part in which Robin comes in. )One day after returning from crusading he came upon a poor peasant who had just killed one of the deer in Sherwood forest that was ONLY meant for the king to hunt. taking pity upon the peasant he killed the kings guards pursuing him and became an outlaw losing his land, wealth, EVERYTHING !!! So he lived in Sherwood Forest as a common thief and helped the poor by giving them food and money. He also saved many a peasant from being hanged. So earning the loyalty and fealty of a few. He had a lover named Marion and many stories claim she married him. He was considered an EXCELLENT archer and disguised himself as a common poor fellow to go to and win many of Prince John's tournaments.!!! was born in Yorkshire circa 1290 - was married to Matilda who pre-deceased him - apart from stories like robin hood & the knight where he loans a knight money to buy back his lands - there is no giving to the poor . nor is there a 'friar tuck' though there may have been a frater (brother tuck) friars werent invented until the 15th century . Robin was murdered November 22 1347 contrary to myth & even his headstone - which was a Victorian attempt at raised antiquity by the Armitage family who raised Kirklees priory to build a hall following the dissolution of the monastaries . Of course this may be contested - but I have researched Robin Hood for 20 years & live within walking distance of many of his haunts - including his official grave in kirklees park - & his actual grave in the nearby church. no its not true

Wakefield passed through Kirklees, suggesting family ties. Those loyal to Lancaster, who held the title of Sheriff of Nottingham and Yorkshire, thus giving him jurisdiction over Sherwood and Barnsdale, held a guerilla camp in Sherwood Forest. During the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322, Lancaster was betrayed to the king by his deputy, Henry de Facombery. Lancaster was killed, leaving his nine-year-old wife Alice du Laci a widow, and Facombery the Sheriff. Hode most likely took over the rebellion, and Matilda, his wife, was active in the struggle, uncommon for women in Medieval Times. There was recorded to be a Little John amongst the numbers, and possibly a Friar Tuck as well. In legend, Robin Hood became sick and Little John took him to see his cousin, the Abbess or Prioress of Kirklees, who was a leech. In real life, Hode's grave lies just outside Kirklees, marked 1347, which is often said to be the year that Robin Hood died. In that same year, the abbess at the time, Elizabeth de Slayton, took her own life, perhaps out of guilt for killing her cousin. The reason people do not find historical evidence of Robin Hood is that they look in the wrong time. He lived during Edward II's reign, not Richard the Lion-Heart's, as the playwright Anthony Munday has immortalized in everyone's minds.
