Answer
The tragedy was caused by armed Armenian revolt against their own country. During WWI the Armenian minority population in the Ottoman Empire decided to side with the invading Russian army and massacre the Turkish population. Ultimately the Ottoman's were able to defeat the Russians. Millions of Turks died as a result of WWI along with 300,000 Armenians.
Currently there is a great deal of dispute between the Turks and Armenians as to what transpired during that period in history. Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey has suggested convening a group of international historians, opening up all archives (Turkish, Armenian, Russian, French and British) and letting the historians settle this once and for all. The Turkish Archives are currently open for anyone to study. The Armenian Archives are not. Armenia refuses to let historians determine these events. They do not want any study where they do not control the outcome. The preferred Armenian method is to have politicians (who have done no research whatsoever) in Europe and the U.S. pass resolutions on this matter. They prefer this because the powerful Armenian lobby can buy the outcome they seek.
