Frescos are murals painted onto plaster. Buon fresco, the technique of painting on wet plaster, creates vibrant colors and lasts a long time. Fresco secco, the technique of painting on dry plaster, does not last nearly as long.

A fresco was painted on plaster. A good example is the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo would apply the plaster to the ceiling and while it was still wet place the pattern he had drawn on the plaster and trace it into the plaster. Then, he would apply the paints. Many times he would decide he didn't like what he had and break it out starting over with the picture.
