Above ground. If they grew underground, they (a) would not be green and (b) would not be peas. +++ The pod is the fruit, and the peas the seeds, of the pea plant.

What vegetable grow above ground?

Common vegetables which grow above ground include: Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, asparagus, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, various greens, celery, rhubarb. Squashes (including pumpkins), tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, okra, green beans and peas are technically fruits, but they are used as vegetables. Peanuts are a special case: they are legumes similar to beans and peas, the fruit pods form above ground but they force their way into the ground to mature. Vegetables that grow underground include: Potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beets, radishes, turnips, onions, garlic. Onions do not grow underground an onion bulb is a swollen stem.

Is all that grows above ground a fruit if so what about melons?

The short answer is no. Celery is not a fruit, nor is spinach, broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower and many other vegetables that grow above the ground. As to melons, they grow above the ground and they are fruit. Growing above the ground does not make it fruit. It is fruit because it is the fruiting body of the plant. It carries the seeds, the next generation of the plant. That's what makes it a fruit from a botanical (plant science) standpoint. From a culinary (cooking science) standpoint, melons are a fruit because they are sweet and juicy and make a nice dessert. Again, this has nothing to do with growing above the ground, though I cannot, offhand, think of any sweet, juicy edibles that grow underground.Of course, now I'm hungry, so I'm going to grill some zucchini (botanically, a fruit) and have some pie made from rhubarb (botanically, a vegetable).

What makes a fruit a fruit and what makes a vegetable a vegetable?

Fruits and vegetables are plants that we eat. Since we are omnivores, we eat both plants and meat. The meat that we eat are cows, pigs, sheep, chicken, duck and sea food. Fruits and vegetables grow in either trees or the ground. Fruits and vegetables are in the same food group. So above, it says fruits and vegetables are plants that grow. The difference between a fruit and a vegetable is that fruits have seeds and vegetables don't. Bananas may appear to have no seeds but they do. Some people might also think that tomatoes, cucumbers and kiwi are vegetables but they are completely a fruit because of their seeds. Also, vegetables are either the root part or the actual bulk of the plant that we eat, while fruits are the seed parts of the plant that are produced from flowers. When we pick a vegetable, usually the entire plant is taken out, but when we pick fruit, the plant lasts to produce more fruit. This hold true for all the above stated fruits.

Can jackfruit grow underground?

In some rare occurrence, the fruit actually grows from the roots under the ground. Called Vaer Palaa in India, the underground jackfruit is considered special and believed to be sweeter and tastier. The existence of an underground fruit is not known until certain cracks appear below the trunk and the sweet aroma of the ripe fruit oozes out from the ground.
