I generally try to avoid anything from Dell, HP or Compaq. Dell's upper models are usually ok, but ive had way too many problems with them in the past.
If you are looking for a good prebuilt manufacturer, Look into ASUS, APC, and Falcon Northwest. If you find a laptop that is "cheap," its generally because the manufacturer uses cheap hardware that has a tendency to fail not long after you buy it.
Im not trying to be a hater, but i have worked on too many wal mart specials.
