Special Forces unit This unit consisted of very dedicated soldiers who were trained in special operations. They were the first ones sent to Viet Nam to train the local militia how to fight and carried out operations against the Communists. They became known simply as "the green berets" because of the distinctive beret they wore.
The orgin of this unit began with the 77th Special Forces Group. President John Kennedy reviewed the troops at a Fort Bragg in 1961 and commented on their green berets and he replied something to the effect that they should keep the green berets. The Army had been tried prevent them from wearing it. The Green Beret became official.
The first insigina that was worn on the beret was the Trojan Horse that had a lightning bolt behind it and a small pair of wings. This indicated their mission of stealth, fast attack and ranger qualities.
Now the headgear for the modern army is a black beret.

The green beret is a woolen cap with a tight headband and a soft full flat top which has green dye embedded in the wool. The green beret is worn in the US Army by Special Forces soldiers. To the best of my knowledge there is no "Green Beret" branch or MOS (military occupational specialy) in the US military.
