Contrary to popular belief, hyenas are not related to dogs or cats. They are in a completely different family. The only animal that is related to the hyena is the aardwolf.
They share an Order, Carnivora, but otherwise are unrelated.
They share a common, very distant ancestor.
"Wolves and Hyenas"....? Not quite.. Hyenas are more closely related to Cats then Dogs. But they are more closely related to the Mongooses and Meerkats, therby falling within the family of Feliformia.

We are not sure if they are related, but just noticed the same similarities between the two and was seeking the same answer. Did you ever find out if the 2 were related or at some time maybe split? Interesting thought though.
