Identical twins = monozygotic twins.

The name means that such twins come from one (mono-) fertilized egg (zygote). At an early stage of development the embryo splits in two, and each cluster of cells develops into a complete adult. All the cells in the two bodies are, barring occasional mutations, genetically identical to the single original zygote.

Non-identical (fraternal) twins = dizygotic twins.

These develop from two fertilized eggs, and are therefore genetically dissimilar.

Whenever two babies are born at the same time, they are considered to be twins. If the two babies resulted from a single zygote that became two genetically identical fetuses, the result is identical twins (who will be very similar in appearance and who will always be of the same gender). If, however, the two babies are the result of two separate zygotes which happened to be formed at about the same time by the fertilization of two separate ova, then the result is fraternal twins (who resemble each other only to the extent that any sibling resembles another sibling, and who are not necessarily of the same gender, which is to say, they can be brother and sister).

Monozygotic twins, because they started out as a single fertilized egg (zygote).

Yes. Fraternal twins don't look alike at all. Identical, meaning to look the same, are well, identical.

Identical twins have the same DNA - meaning that without the effects of environment they would be identical in every single way.

Why are identical twins identical and fraternal twins are not?

Identical twins are formed from a single egg that splits into two. Fraternal twins are formed from two separate eggs that are both separately fertilized. So identical twins have identical DNA, and fraternal twins do not.

How are twins identical?

Twins are identical because they come from the same egg.

Can Tay-Sachs occur in twins?

Yes, it is possible. It would be more common if the twins are fraternal that only one twin would be affected by the disease because it is a recessive trait, meaning both parents must be a carrier for the offspring to be affected. If the twins are identical and the tay-sachs gene is present, then boths twins will be infected because identical twins have identical DNA

Why are identical twins and fraternal twins not the exact same?

Identical twins are formed from a single egg that splits into two. Fraternal twins are formed from two separate eggs that are both separately fertilized. So identical twins have identical DNA, and fraternal twins do not.

How do you get identical and non identical twins?

Identical twins are formed when one fertilized eggs splits. Non-identical twins are formed when two separate eggs are fertilized.
