What are intravenous drips? |
[Improve]
The answer will be easier if it is broken down.
- First "Intravenous" means to be passed into a vein. This is done with a hollow tube (cannula) inserted into the vein.
- Secondly "drip" in this instance is the fluid going through the IV tubing as administered from a bag or bottle of fluid dripping its contents at a measured flow (drops per minute. Doctors' set this amount depending upon the medication and how much is needed. An example would be 60gtt (drops) per minute which equals 60 ml/hr.
