What are joules?

A Joule is the unit of energy or work in the SI system. It is defined as the work done in moving 1 meter against a force of 1 Newton. Other relations are that 1 Joule/sec = 1 watt, 1 calorie = 4.2 Joules, 1 BTU = 1055 Joules.
