Lightening rods are certainly used today; in metropolitan areas, most houses are surrounded by higher buildings, poles, trees and other points, and this don't have much risk. But in rural areas, on high landmarks and other structures (even buildings atop the Great Wall of China), they are still used. DOODLE!

With the advent of wire grounding for a home's electrical system, there is less need for a separate conductive path. However, lighting rods are still used on aircraft, steeples, bridges, monuments, and rural structures. Their use on tall buildings is to prevent damage to roofs or transmission antennas.
